Nowadays, our lifestyle has significantly changed. People no longer pay attention to their diet and they start to develop bad eating habits. One of the reasons behind this fact is that they no longer have the time to prepare homemade meals, so they resort to fast food and precooked products. Unfortunately, most of these foods have a high glycemic level, which in time can lead to serious consequences. Most of you have probably heard by now of the glycemic index, which ranks carbohydrate foods according to the effect they have on blood glucose levels. If you want to develop a healthier lifestyle, then you should consider approaching a diet which consists mainly of low glycemic foods.

Unlike high glycemic foods, low glycemic foods are more advisable, because they are broken down gradually, over time. As they are not absorbed too quickly, low glycemic foods keep the levels of blood glucose more stable. The benefits of low glycemic foods are thus undeniable. People with stable blood glucose levels have more energy and they no longer crave for sweets. Many people always feel the need of eating chocolate or other sweet foods. If you opt for low glycemic foods, this need will start to go away, which means that you will look and feel better at the same time. Low glycemic foods keep you full longer, so you will stop gaining weight, but you will also be more active and be able to complete chores faster.

Moreover, low glycemic foods are perfect for those who suffer from diabetes, because they improve the blood glucose control. Remember, though, that it is important to combine low glycemic foods with the high glycemic ones. Here are some examples of low glycemic foods, which are also great providers of minerals, fibres and vitamins: oats, pasta, fruits (most of them), sweet potatoes, sweet corn, multi-grain bread, legumes, yoghurt and low-fat milk. And the list can continue. It becomes obvious that low glycemic foods are great for your health and they are the perfect way to stay fit while still providing your body with the needed amount of carbohydrates.
