There has been a lot of speculation about dieting using low glycemic food however when done in the right way there is no doubt that the diet system works. The idea is to only eat low GI food after your afternoon tea which means that dinner should really consist of meat and vegetable from the lower end of the glycemic index. The GI rating starts at top with glucose being rating 100. Dropping from 100 to 0 you can count all foods that are under a rating of 50 to be in the low glycemic category. This means they are lower in sugar than the foods which are higher than 50 on the index.
The glycemic index has been around for quite a few years and it was Dr. D. Jenkins who designed the working low glycemic foods diet as a part of good nutrition. Being a nutrition lecturer at the University of Toronto, Jenkins had access to good quality research material and help from other staff. His venture turned into a very successful line of books which have sold millions of copies around the world.
It is important to follow the GI rules when you are trying to lose weight through diet and exercise because many misconceptions have been made about which foods are healthy and which are not. Foods that are high on the GI chart turn quickly into glucose in the body and when they are not needed by the body as fuel or are not stored as glycogen then they are converted into fat cells to be stored for later use. This is where excess fat is often accumulated by people, through eating high GI foods and not burning the ready fuels.
